Hafmey, Mother of Pearl

My Amma, or grandmother, was a beautiful diminutive blonde who bravely faced emigrating to America with my grandfather and their infant son. They settled in the tiny community where I later grew up, which was filled with other immigrants from their native home of Iceland. She encountered many hardships and didn’t speak English.

My sweetheart found an empty picture frame by the side of the road and brought it home for me. I hung it picture-less on the wall across from the bed and as I would lay there in the morning I began to see a beautiful mermaid beginning to materialize whom appeared to resemble my Amma. I think of her often and based this painting on a historic photo of her. It makes me feel that she is finally free.
