This painting was inspired by Pele the Volcano Goddess, who is mysterious and captivating. She lives comfortably among the searing flames, watching over Hawaii. Who could not be enticed by her eyes on fire? Even her eyelashes are tiny flames. It is said Pele’s face has mysteriously appeared in photos of the lava lake within the crater at Kilauea National Park. According to legend, Pele travels throughout the islands, appearing to mankind as a beautiful young woman, or as an old woman. Among the people of the islands, Pele is revered and respected.
